The Animal and Collections Safety Team Supervisor provides leadership and staff supervision, as well as ongoing safety and monitoring of all living and non-living collections areas within the California Science Center. Duties may include performing security patrols by foot, monitoring, recording, and maintaining cameras and security systems, and responding to, and reporting, emergencies as defined in procedures. They are also required to review daily logs, document and report all incidents, and assist with events and guest interactions.

QUALIFICATIONS

Good Candidates Have:

  • Minimum of 1 year experience in a security/surveillance field.
  • Ability to coach and redirect Animal and Collections Safety Technician Team members with diverse and varying backgrounds and experience levels when protocols are violated or not followed according to protocol.
  • Ability to work independently as well as leading a team.
  • Demonstrates ability to work with various computer programs and software related to essential functions of the position.
  • Needs to have both sufficient mobility and strength to patrol assigned areas for up to 6 hours of standing, walking, climbing stairs, and the ability to sit in one place for up to 6 hours at a time and maintain concentration on CCTV monitors.
  • Must speak and articulate clearly for radio and personal communications, be able to hear communications accurately over the radio and in person and be able to see with clarity up to 75ft.
  • Ability to lift, pull, shift, push 50 pounds, work outside in varying weather conditions, work in wet and dirty locations.
  • In emergencies, the ability to come in contact and contain various aquatic and terrestrial animals.
  • Highly organized with strong writing skills, effective oral communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Must exercise good judgement and have a high level of integrity to be tactful and courteous in all dealings with visitors, staff and vendors.
  • Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and have a flexible schedule. Must be able to respond to emergency coverage needs as necessary (days, nights, weekends, and holidays).
  • Must maintain a reliable form of contact (i.e. cellphone or home phone) as well as reliable transportation to and from the California Science Center.

Great Candidates Also Have:

  • Minimum of 3+ years of experience in surveillance, safety, and/or animal-related within an AZA facility.
  • Minimum of 1+ years of experience in a supervisory role.
  • Previous experience operating and maintaining security camera systems.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work closely with the Living Collections Coordinator to ensure the smooth operation of the Animal and Collections Safety Technician Team.
  • Communicates organizational needs, provides guidance and support, makes recommendations for increasing team efficiency, and communicates between Animal and Collections Safety Technician Team members and external departments within the California Science Center.
  • Reviews the work of subordinate staff to ensure standards are maintained and procedures are consistently followed.
  • With the Living Collections Coordinator, develop team schedules and provides shift coverage as necessary.
  • Ensure the CCTV system is operating properly. Assists with scheduling repairs and maintenance with contractors.
  • Reviews all logs and documentation related to the Animal and Collections Safety Technician Team and ensures they are written without spelling and/or grammatical errors.
  • Performs and documents regular inspections of all California Science Center areas; documents conditions, including environment temperatures, physical barriers, pump status, exhibit repairs, vandalism, etc.
  • Assist with events as needed to ensure the safety of all collections and guests.
  • Adhere to and abide by Federal, State, and local agency laws, regulations, codes, and ordinances, as well as AZA standards. 
  • Assists with securing California Science Center facilities at the end of the business day, and with reopening procedures in the morning.
  • Observes, detects, and immediately reports incidents, safety concerns, damage, and other abnormal conditions to designated responders, completes incident reports, maintains ongoing logs of alarms and unusual circumstances, and other documentation as required.
  • May assist on-site or off-site staff in diagnosing facilities problems by checking equipment for proper operation.
  • Maintains a high level of customer service to staff and guests, and a high degree of collaboration and cooperation with colleagues within the Living Collections Department.
  • Enforces California Science Center Foundation policies and regulations within the guidelines provided.
  • Required to carry radio and respond to calls while on duty.
  • Performs administrative duties as required.
  • Perform other duties as required.

COMPENSATION

$24.25 per hour
